Josh and Xander could only gasp as they looked through the rain-spattered windshield to the seven dark shapes racing into the night. An unholy silence crept over them, the almost felt paralyzed. Thunder roared and lightning lept in the sky like a herd of gazelle, the clouds flashed white then back to black. Both Xan and Josh jumped; Josh turned and stared into Xan's icy eyes.
"We need to stop those horses."

The blue Jeep bounced and spit mud out of the back as they roared down the thin dirt road, following the horses to the ditch. Rain still slammed down, soaking everything in its reach. They pulled a good 100 feet in front of the herd, the tires screeching and slipping, seeking purchase in the mudslide it was driving in. The back end tailed, swishing violently from side to side; and the Jeep kept slipping until it tipped over the edge of the ditch.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
That was the last thing Josh could remember. Looking at his cousin in complete terror as the Jeep slowly tipped on its back and it the ditch flat and hard; shaking the earth, their brains, and caving the roofless vehicle in. He woke up dizzy and disoriented, crusted blood on his forehead and his arm was very tender. He felt the flesh and gently squeezed his left forearm, only to squint in agony. Definitely broken. He looked over at Xander only to see the muscular man doubled over, unconscious. Josh tenderly moved over a few inches, to get a better look at their predicament. The Jeep was on its roof, the roof bars and surrounding metal crushed, bent into all kinds of monstrous shapes. Jagged edges stuck out from the hollow bars that were split, and broken glass from the windshield was scattered everywhere. They were completely trapped. Josh tipped his head back ever so slightly, to avoid the bent-in roof only inches from his head. He saw the pale pink of dawn out of the hole in the side where the dirver's door used to be. They'd been out for several hours. The deep clouds were completely gone, only wisps of white fluff could be seen against the salmon sky. Rain was no longer falling, but the Jeep rested in deep mud; and Josh guessed that the rest of the ranch would be covered in mud. After this thought, Josh's vision blackened at the edges and he passed out again.

Probably about 6 hours later, judging by the sun in mid-sky; Josh came to and had to remember what exactly happened. He looked over at Xander, who appeared to still be out.
I have to wake him up somehow, Josh thought quickly. He looked up once again to see his allotted space, around and then back and forth. His neck was almost pressed into his chest, and his legs were lost in a mass of metal beneath. Almost fetal position, he shuffled his butt over as far as possible; grasping for Xander's orange poncho the entire while. He grimaced in pain as he moved, for his legs were being pulled in the other direction due to being pinned under him. He paused for a minute, and then resumed his reaching for Xan. His fingers finally curled around the plastic material, making Josh smile. A small victory for the morning! He shook the material hard, making loud noises with his mouth and trying everything to wake him up. About exhausting minutes later, Xan's eyes slowly flitted open. "Wha... Where are... We? What?"
"We're in Hawaii Xan! Welcome to the islands!"
The dark man smiled, but the smile was replaced with a tight grimace of extreme pain.
"Crap, dude. My stomach hurts really badly."
"Well, stop drinking so many pina coladas!"
"How do we get out of here?"
"Do you have your cell?"
Xan sighed and wrenched his left hand from under his butt, not enough elbow room to pull the right arm free. Josh lay on his side, legs curled at the knees and disappearing under crushed dash to where his feet should be. Xan's head and neck had plenty of space, but there was a huge gash dripping pus on his cheek; and his right arm was pinned between his side and the remains of the passenger side door. He felt in his pocket gently for where the black iPhone should be. Yes! It was there! He used his middle and index finger to slide it out, the planted it on the roof below them.
"Mate, lets' call Chloe' or Haruko for some help, Jess is at school by now. We need to get out before we faint again because of all the blood rushing to our noggins."
Josh nodded ever so slightly, then took the phone from Xan and dialed the seven numbers to Chloe's cell. Ring, ring, nothing. Ring, ring, nothing. He dialed again. Ring, ring, nothing. Ring, ring...
"Why are you waking me up so early Xan? Did you fall and need a Band-Aid and a kiss from mama?" A very groggy Chloe' chuckled at her own joke, clearly very tired.
"Hey Chloe', this is Josh. We've got a very serious situation down at the youngstock pastures, by the ditch next to the river. Bring everyone you can, even the hospital staff. Call the freaking fire department. Oh, bring a crowbar."
"What happened?" She got very serious, and from the shuffling noise in the background, Josh knew she was putting her clothes on already.
"The Jeep fish-tailed in the mud as we were chasing some break out youngin's, and I'm assuming it flipped and is now resting roof top in the mud. About seven horses were racing to the ditch, so we've got those to worry about. Oh, and Xan and I are still stuck inside the Jeep."
"...."
"Chloe'?"
Josh chuckled to himself as he heard the line buzz, they'd be out of here in no time due to the fact she must already be calling 911.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Not even 6 minutes later, Josh and Xan's eyes whipped open to the sound of wailing sirens coming over the bridge. Josh looked over at Xan and simply smiled, for within the next half hour both were on stretchers on their way to the hospital within BRR; which also treated the staff along with animals around the valley. The extraction process was long, but both made it out safely with help from Chloe', Haruko, and the Kalispell Fire Department.
Josh was diagnosed with a broken left arm, and both of his feet were completely shattered. He had cuts all over his bare arms and lower legs, as well as his head. Xander got off a little luckier, with a bruised kidney and the large gash on his cheek looking to heal nicely. He must take it easy for the next while for his kidney to heal up, but other than that all he had was some scratches and bruises along his right arm to show where it had been pinned. As soon as Josh and Xander were taken care of, Chloe' went looking for the missing horses.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Following a trail, more or less, from the broken fencing, Chloe' had her phone already calling Xander, so as to report to the two men what she found as soon as she saw it. After following the muddy and almost washed away trail, Chloe' came to the ditch, where she could only gasp.
Wallowing deep in mud below her were five young horses: Duke, Lou, Mimi, Biscuit, and Winnie. Duke was lying down on his side, plastered in mud with his front left leg splayed out at an odd angle; he appeared to be asleep and breathing hard. He was on a raised portion of the area, barely big enough for himself. Lou and Winnie appeared to be outwardly okay, the yearling and young filly standing next to each other, knee deep in the thick, soupy mess. Biscuit and Mimi were next to Lou and Winnie, but Mimi was laying down, her legs tucked under her, or so it seemed. Biscuit was standing almost over the 3 year old, putting his weight completely on his left side; it seemed that something was wrong with his right-side legs as he limped around the mud ever so slightly. Chloe' whispered into her phone all that she saw, then crouched onto her stomach to observe the pitiful creatures as Xan called the hospital to bring some trailers. She watched Mimi struggle lightly to get out of the deep mud, only to be sucked back in. Winnie's belly didn't even clear how deep it was, the poor thing was shaking terribly as flies landed on her and the others. But why was this mud so deep? Chloe's answer came from the raging Blaine River above the ditch, spilling water over every now and then. It must have completely flooded over during the rainstorm, and added with the water already there; created the swampy more-water-than-mud condition the poor horses were stuck in now. She observed the wallowing horses for a couple minutes more, then slowly made her presence known.
"Hey, my beautiful horses, what happened my babies?"
The horses' ears shot up, and Duke woke up suddenly. Mimi started to flail very hard in the slop, leading to her ultimate exhaustion. Duke tried standing up, only to fall heavily on his side as his leg refused to support him. The other horses simply whinnied weakly as they watched her with slatted eyes. Chloe' prayed that the hospital trailers showed up before Mimi completely exhausted herself. Not even 5 seconds later, she heard the sound of multiple tires sucking at the mud on the dirt road. She sighed in relief, then army-crawled backwards and jumped to her feet, waving her arms to signal the drivers. They backed their trailers up to the ditch, then started to devise a plan with Chloe' on how to extract the beasts; as they came to a conclusion, her eyes widened in fright.
"Xan and Josh said there were seven... This is only five horses..."
One of the drivers looked at her in confusion.
"I need to go look for the other two! Which by judging from the two broken pastures is Boon and Drips!" She sprinted away to the river, following the current all the way down to the end of the dog kennel. And hour later, she started to scream in frustration. Where could the pair be?! Then, almost a faint whisper of an idea came into her head. "What if they jumped part of the ditch, and swam upstream?" she whispered to herself. She looked up, then sprinted with all her might along the river upstream, leaving herself at the lower cattle pasture where the longhorns were kept. Good thing she was a cross country runner, no ordinary person could have ever run that much with vigor! Chloe’ walked slowly along the pasture, until she saw it. Broken barbed wire was strewn all over the wet ground, a large portion of the fence completely gone.
“Crap.”
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Drips and Boon could be seen from the break in fencing, Drips' small white form seen about 300 feet from fencing.
Chloe' raced over to the mare and almost threw up at the terrible sight. Drips was laying down in some light mud, barbed wire covering her body. Shaking and bleeding heavily, the young mare attempted ot get up at seeing Chloe', but to no avail. It only ripped her skin and fur even more, causing the terrified mare to slump back over. Pieces of the wooden fence were still attached to one of the barbed wire strands, and splinters covered her hind pasterns. The mare shuffled over to reveal a dark shape; and Chloe' could hardly bear to look. A bleeding and broken Boon lie behind Drips, appearing to be unconcious from loss of blood. Though her wounds were not as numerous as Drips', they were very deep and bleeding profously. Flies were all over the duo, pus leaking out from half crusted up wounds. Chloe' snapped some pictures from the distance, then dialed Dr. McBrill's cell as soon as she could.
